Dallas Press Club honors alumni with Katie awards

Four alumni last week won Katie awards, a prestigious media citation given by The Press Club of Dallas.

Delia Jalomo and Darren Barbee of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram won for best news graphic and best investigative reporting, respectively. Jalomo also won for collaborating on a informational story.

Tom Fox and Dean Hollingsworth, from The Dallas Morning News, won for photography and best portfolio on online illustrations, respectively.

The Katies are awarded annually at a banquet to honor excellence in journalism and mass communications. Proceeds from the banquet go to The Press Club of Dallas Foundation journalism and scholarship program.

The Cornerstone cancels free lunches until spring

The Cornerstone’s free Monday lunch is canceled until spring because of an increase in attendants.

Director Jim Reynolds said an increase from about 250 people a week to 400 sapped funding that was budgeted for smaller crowds.

Next year’s budget has more funding for the lunches, he said.

Reynolds said the cancellation will free up funds for a pancake breakfast 8 p.m. Dec. 7 at the student ministry.

The lunches, which participants call the UTA feeding frenzy, are “a way to show God’s love in a practical way — with no strings attached,” Reynolds said.

The lunches do not include a Bible study but include announcements inviting students to participate in Lifegroups, small groups in which people can explore spirituality and make friends in a safe environment, he said.

Friday coffeehouse events, from 8 p.m. to midnight, will continue, Reynolds said.

CORRECTIONS

The brief “Dallas Press Club honors alumni with Katie awards” should have said that Tom Pennington, a Fort Worth Star-Telegram photographer, and the Wichita Falls Times Record News writer Michael Hines also won Katie awards from the Press Club of Dallas. Star-Telegram writer Darren Barbee was a finalist but did not win. The information was incorrect in a release from the Public Affairs office.
